Description
Milepost located on Warwick Road at Pittern Hill, dating from around 1832. It is made of painted cast iron and was cast by W Glover and Sons of Warwick. The milepost has a triangular section with two faces and a segmental-headed chamfered top. The raised lettering on the top reads "KINETON/ LONDON/ 86"; on the left side, it reads "WARWICK/ 10/ STRATFORD/ ON-AVON/ 9"; and on the right side, "BANBURY/ 13". Each face features an oval panel that records the manufacturer. Historically, this milepost is associated with the Upton, Kineton and Wellesbourne Turnpike, established by an Act of Parliament in 1770, and it likely was erected during the significant road repairs in the early 1830s, as it appears on the 1834 one-inch Ordnance Survey map.
