Description
The mile marker post outside Latini Restaurant in Newport Pagnell dates from around 1815 and was created for the Oxford to Cambridge turnpike Trust. It is made of cast iron and features an open-backed triangular section with a top that slopes back to a half-round moulded design. The post is painted with inscriptions: "NEWPORT" on the top, "NEWPORT PAGNELL" on the left side, and "STONY STRATFORD 6 BUCKINGHAM 13" on the right side. The Oxford to Cambridge turnpike was established in 1815, and the Trust required the installation of markers at each mile stage, making this mile marker likely erected in or shortly after that year at the western entrance to the town. It is a well-preserved example of an early 19th-century mile post.
