Description
The milepost, dating from the early 19th century, is made of cast iron and is situated at the junction of Henley Road and Oxford Road (A4074), between Shillingford and Dorchester. It marks a distance of 48 miles from London and is part of the former London–Henley–Oxford turnpike.
The milepost has a V-shaped design with a sloping triangular top and a vertical headplate, standing on a concrete support. A small section on the lower left-hand side, facing south, has been repaired with cement. The southern face features inscriptions indicating ‘Oxford 10’ and ‘Abingdon 8’, while the northern face shows ‘Henley 13’ and ‘Wallingford 2’, with ‘Shillingford’ below. The vertical front face displays ‘London 48’ along with ‘T & J Perry Reading’ on the triangular sloped top.
