Description

The milepost at Larkfield, located on the north side of London Road, is a cast-iron structure likely dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is designed in a V-section and is painted white, attached to an earlier milestone that is similarly painted. The head of the milepost features black-painted relief lettering that reads 'To/LONDON/30/East Malling'. On the right side, facing east, it indicates 'WROTHAM/6', while on the left side, facing west, it shows 'MAIDSTONE/4'.

Historically, from the late 17th century to the mid 18th century, many turnpike trusts were established to manage roads connecting London with major cities and ports. Milestones became common in the mid 18th century, particularly after the 1744 Turnpike Act made their provision compulsory on many turnpike roads.

This milepost is positioned along the road from London to Folkestone and Dover and appears in its current location on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1862, suggesting it has remained in its original spot. The road was turnpiked between 1750 and 1780, and a toll house was located at Larkfield, which was reportedly demolished in the 1960s. The milepost, being attached to an earlier milestone, is likely from the early to mid 19th century, though its exact date is difficult to determine. A similar milepost, which is also Grade II listed, can be found two miles closer to London at Ryarsh, and a damaged example is said to exist to the east in Ditton.
