Description

891/0/10009 STRATFORD ROAD 18-JUL-01 Milepost

II

Milepost. 1833. Cast iron. Of V plan, open to back, with down-sloping triangular cap. Lettered in raised capital letters in superimposed pairs of rectangular mouldings with scooped corners: to left side top BUCKINGHAM 9, bottom STRATFORD 1, and to right side top NEWPORT 5, bottom STRATFORD 1. Painted white with mouldings lettering and figures painted black. HISTORY: An error was made on the original mould and the right side bottom lettering should have read WOLVERTON 1. This was corrected by painting WOLVERTON below STRATFORD. The Milepost was restored and reset in its original location by the Milton Keynes Museum of Industry and Rural Life and the casting error was left without the corrective over-painting.
