Description
This is a milepost from 1833 made of cast iron. It has a V shape, is open at the back, and features a down-sloping triangular cap. The milepost is lettered in raised capital letters within superimposed pairs of rectangular mouldings with scooped corners. On the left side, the top reads "BUCKINGHAM 9" and the bottom "STRATFORD 1". On the right side, the top reads "NEWPORT 5" and the bottom "STRATFORD 1". The milepost is painted white, with the mouldings, lettering, and figures painted black.
There was an error in the original mould, as the right side bottom lettering should have read "WOLVERTON 1". This was corrected by painting "WOLVERTON" below "STRATFORD". The milepost was restored and reset in its original location by the Milton Keynes Museum of Industry and Rural Life, and the casting error was left without corrective over-painting.
