Description
Wolverton House is a large, sprawling stone house with steeply pitched old tile roofs, likely dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It was modernized around 1800 when a compact two-storey section with three windows was added to the south end. The building features four heavy pilasters that rise from the ground to a deep plain frieze and cornice with a blocking course. All windows have glazing bars, with the two ground floor windows being three-light sashes set in segmental-headed recesses, while the first-floor windows are single-light sashes in plain reveals. The flush quoins, window surrounds, and edges of the pilasters are made of a darker stone than the rest of the house.
The central entrance includes a square-headed doorway with deep panelled reveals and soffit, leading to a shallow stone porch supported by two heavy panelled pilasters and topped with a shallow triangular pediment. The fairly steep roof is slate in the front and features three dormers with semi-circular headed casement windows. On the west side, there is a two-storey, three-light bow window with glazing bar sashes and a canopy extending to the right and left on a cast iron frame, along with a tented canopy on the first floor. The parapet has three panels, and there is a door to the left with marginal glazing in the top half. To the east, there is a rendered gable end of an earlier recessed section, featuring a bargeboard, two pointed windows with marginal glazing and labels, and two pointed lunettes, one above and one below, also with labels.
Wolverton House and the stable block to the east form a group.
