Description

Spinney Cottage is an early to mid-18th century cottage, altered in 1887 by Edward Swinfen Harris. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with a plain-tile roof featuring ornamental tile ridges. Brick stacks stand on the rear and lateral sides of the roof.

The cottage has a plan of one room deep and a one-storey-plus-attic range. The main entrance is to the larger of the two ground floor rooms. A rear, central winder staircase leads to three communicating rooms on the upper level.

The facade facing the road has a plank door situated to the right of centre and three-light casement windows on the ground floor to the left and right, all with wooden lintels. A large dormer gable, also to the right of centre, contains a pair of two-light casement windows set within red brick. A lintel beam forms the base of a timber-framed dormer gable with brick nogging; the top of the gable is tile-hung. The lintel beam is inscribed with the date AD 1887. The dormer gable has simply decorated bargeboards.

The interior of the main room features a chamfered spine beam. Other features include plank doors and plank floors. The winder staircase ascends to a plank door at the top, leading to three communicating rooms in the attic. The cottage has thick interior walls.

A brick coal shed with a tile roof is located in the garden.

Previously known as Warren Farm Cottage, the property was likely thatched before being re-roofed and otherwise improved by Edward Swinfen Harris, acting for the Radcliffe Trust.
