Description

The former school and school house, now serving as a parish hall and dwelling, was built between 1856 and 1857. It is possibly designed by Charles Couchman, a surveyor for the Radcliffe Trust from Birmingham. The building is constructed from coursed squared local limestone with limestone dressings, featuring slate roofs adorned with ornamental blue tile ridges and stone stacks for both internal and external use.

The school, now the hall, has an L-shaped plan, while the school house, located on the west side, has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys tall. The north gable ends of both the school and school house face Old Wolverton Road. The school has a large tripartite window, with the central light featuring a painted arched head that rises above the outer lights into a pointed arch over the entire window. The school house has a blank window on the ground floor with a rock-faced, flint-arched stone head, and a two-light casement window above it on the first floor, also with a similar stone head.

The front of the school house, facing west, includes a gabled stone porch to the left of centre, three-light casement windows on the ground floor, and a two-light casement window on the first floor to the right, all with flat-arched stone heads. The school features a gabled stone porch on the left side, which projects flush with the gable end, and a doorway to the east with a pointed arched head. Adjacent to the porch is a four-light, diamond-leaded wood mullion and transom window with a flat-arched stone head. A wing projects to the rear left, showcasing a tripartite window on the east gable end, similar to the front gable, and a stone bellcote at the apex of the gable. Inside, the school has an open collar truss roof.

This building was constructed by the Radcliffe Trust for the education of children from the tenants and farm labourers of their Wolverton estate.
