Description

Old Wolverton Mill is a historic building that dates back to the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with blue diaper patterns. The south gable end was extended around 1835 to create the entrance front. The building has two and three storeys and features three windows. The stone window heads and rusticated quoins frame the central entrance, which is round-headed and includes a Gothick fanlight above a six-panel door. The windows are mostly three-light casements, except for a single light window above the entrance, all with glazing bars.

The roof has a hipped slate section to the right and a low-pitched slate roof over the rest. To the right, there is a single-storey lean-to with its gable end built up as a segmental pediment over a round-headed window with Gothick glazing. To the left, there is a single-storey, four-bay stone-built range. The mill buildings rise to four storeys and have two gables facing east, with the right-hand gable built up from a single-storey lean-to added later. There are blocked round-headed arches over two races and a quatrefoil window above the right-hand arch. At the rear, a similar window is flanked by lancets. The water-wheels have been removed, and a former steam chimney to the north-west is now incorporated into a lean-to shed. This mill is noted as a Domesday Mill, highlighting its historical significance.
