Description
This is a milepost made of painted cast iron, dating from around 1828. It has a hollow triangular shape with a flat upper flange that has a curved edge. The milepost is painted white, featuring raised lettering and details in black. On the black painted base, the left side reads 'THORNEWILL' and the right side reads 'BURTON'. The inscription on the left states 'TUTBURY 1/2 MILE', while the right side indicates 'BURTON 4 MILES'. The top reads 'TUTBURY PARISH', and the top flange displays 'LONDON 129 MILES' in a radial arrangement.
The milepost was erected by the Ashby de la Zouch to Tutbury Turnpike Trust and was cast in Burton upon Trent around 1828. It is designated as Grade II due to its well-preserved condition, its original location, its group value with other listed mileposts along the route, and its significance as a reminder of the standardisation of roads and the introduction of turnpikes that supported the transport needs of the increasingly industrial landscape of 18th century Staffordshire.
