Description

This is an early to mid-19th century Neoclassical building, originally appearing on Ordnance Survey maps as Town Hall, and later known as Church House. It has been converted into apartments around 1998. The building is constructed of yellow brick with Welsh slate roofing. It is two storeys high and features giant Doric pilasters on pedestals, an entablature with triglyphs, guttae, and a blocking course. There is a plinth, and the east front has a slightly projecting central pediment with a circular lunette, and a round-headed ground-floor panel with an arched window. The windows are predominantly 1:1:1 sashes, with the ground-floor side windows set in oblong panels. The north front has a central open pediment with an oval panel in the tympanum. It has three sashes and three dummy windows across the centre of the ground floor, with three sashes on the first floor. A late 19th or early 20th century west wing, designed in an Art Nouveau style, is constructed of red brick with pebbledash and stone dressings. The south side of the building is partially obscured by modern former public conveniences, now offices, and external iron stairs.
