Description

The milepost located at SK0708935315, outside the JCB World Parts Centre, is an early 19th-century structure made of painted cast iron. It has a triangular shape with an inclined head and a segmental-arched, raised back plate. The milepost features relief lettering inscriptions: on the right face, it reads "UTTOXETER 2 MILES"; on the left face, "NEWCASTLE 16 MILES"; on the head, "UTTOXETER PARISH"; and on the back plate, "LONDON 141 LIVERPOOL 70".

This milepost was erected by the Uttoxeter to Blythe Marsh Turnpike Trust and was cast in Burton upon Trent in 1828. Milestones like this one are important as they represent some of the few remaining physical markers of historical road use in the UK. The mileposts along this route illustrate the standardisation of roads and the establishment of turnpikes to meet the transport demands of the increasingly industrialised 18th-century Staffordshire. Although this post has been moved, it is still considered nationally significant because it remains close to its original location and is situated on the same road.
