Description
The milepost located approximately 140 meters east of Totmonslow Farm in Draycott in the Moors is an early 19th-century structure made of painted cast iron. It has a triangular shape with an inclined head and a segmental-arched, raised back plate. The milepost features relief lettering inscriptions: on the right face, it reads "UTTOXETER 8 MILES"; on the left face, "NEWCASTLE 10 MILES"; on the head, "DRAYCOTT PARISH"; and on the back plate, "LONDON 147 / LIVERPOOL 64."
This milepost was erected by the Uttoxeter to Blythe Marsh Turnpike Trust and was cast in Burton upon Trent in 1828. Milestones like this one are nationally significant as they represent some of the few physical remnants of historic road use, reflecting the standardization of roads and the establishment of turnpikes to meet the transport demands of the increasingly industrialized 18th-century Staffordshire. This particular milepost remains intact and in its original location, and it has group value with other listed mileposts along this route.
