Description
The milepost at Green Park is an early 19th-century milestone made of painted cast iron. It has a triangular shape with an inclined head and a segmental-arched raised back plate. The right face of the milepost features the inscription 'UTTOXETER 5 MILES', while the left face reads 'NEWCASTLE 13 MILES'. The head displays 'CHECKLEY PARISH', and the back plate shows 'LONDON/ 144 / LIVERPOOL 67'. This milepost was cast in Burton upon Trent around 1828.
Mileposts are significant as they represent some of the few remaining physical markers of historic road use in the UK. The mileposts along this route highlight the standardisation of roads and the establishment of turnpikes, which were essential for meeting the transport demands of the increasingly industrialised landscape of 18th-century Staffordshire. This particular milepost is one of several 19th-century cast iron examples in the area and holds group value with other listed mileposts along the same route. It remains intact and in its original location.
