Description

Red Lion Court, comprising numbers 1-5, is a house that was originally a public house, later reconverted into five separate houses in August 1994. The building dates to the 17th century, with subsequent alterations and additions. It is constructed of lias limestone rubble, which has been re-faced with scored stucco, with brick to the rear. The roof is steeply pitched and covered in slate, with brick end stacks, a cross-axial stack, and a return lateral stack. The building’s shape is an L.

The exterior presents a symmetrical three-window front with a single-window wing projecting to the right under a hipped roof. The entrance features a doorcase with a consoled open pediment above a six-panel door. Two canted bay windows have cornices over their sashes. The first floor windows consist of two-light and flanking three-light leaded casements. A hipped roof dormer has a two-light casement. The projecting wing features a canted entrance behind an anta, flanked by angle pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. It has three-light casements to each floor, with the ground-floor window boarded, and the first-floor window with leaded glazing. Similar windows are also present on the return side of the wing.

The rear of the building has a brick platband and three ranges of outbuildings forming a courtyard. The outbuildings are brick with tile roofs. One section to the street is stone with alternating narrow courses and a hipped tile roof. Another section has a wall partially rebuilt in breeze blocks and a 19th-century projection with an entrance and three sash windows.

The interior has not been inspected.
