Description

28 and 29 are a pair of cottages located in Preston on Stour, dating from the 17th century or early 18th century, with alterations and additions made around 1860. The cottages are constructed of brick with some rendering on a partly stone plinth and feature a renewed tile roof with two brick stacks at the rear of the ridge. The gable faces the front to the right.

The cottages are single storey with an attic and have a four-window range, with 19th-century lean-to outshuts at both ends. The entrance on the right end has a timber lintel over a wide-boarded door, while the left-hand outshut has a segmental-headed entrance with a plank door. The ground floor includes windows with 4:3:2:3-light casements, with the 3-light casement at the end positioned under the door lintel. The attic features gabled dormers with 2-light casements, all equipped with leaded glazing and iron opening casements. The rear of the cottages has five small windows, two of which have leaded glazing. The left return includes a 2-light small-paned casement and an angle stack to the outshut.

Although the interior was not inspected, it has been noted to contain exposed beams and wide-board doors. The cottages were altered in the 19th century for the Alscot Park estate.
