Description
15 and 16 are a pair of estate cottages built between 1852 and 1856 for James Roberts West. They are constructed of brick and feature a fishscale tile roof with decorative cresting and brick cross-axial stacks with clustered diagonal shafts. The cottages are designed in a T-plan and stand two storeys tall, presenting a symmetrical two-window range. They have wide eaves and verges with chamfered brick cornices and gables. Each entrance is located at the ends and features a four-centred head with a labelmould over a plank door equipped with enriched strap hinges. The ground floor has segmental-headed windows with brick sills and labelmoulds above three-light casements that include cast-iron lattice glazing, while the first floor has windows with two-light casements beneath gablets. The returns of the cottages have single lights on the ground floor and a two-light casement on the first floor. The cottages were built as part of a model estate village and are complemented by three other pairs that create a symmetrical layout.
