Description

This is a pair of estate cottages located in Preston on Stour, dated 1857 and built for James Roberts West. The cottages are constructed of brick and feature a fishscale tile roof with decorative cresting, along with brick cross-axial stacks topped with octagonal shafts. The building has an L-plan layout and is two storeys high with a two-window range. The gable breaks forward to the right of the center.

The exterior includes wide eaves and verges. At the right end, there is a segmental-headed entrance with a plank door that has enriched strap hinges, topped by a gabled timber canopy with decorative framing. The ground floor features segmental-headed windows with brick sills and labelmoulds above, containing 2-light and 3-light casements with enriched cast-iron glazing. The first floor has windows with 2-light casements, with the left window set in a gabled half-dormer.

The left return of the building has a canted bay window beneath a hipped roof, with a datestone above the gable. The rear wing includes an entrance with a gabled open timber porch and a half-dormer above, along with a cross-axial stack. The datestone on the rear reads "IRW 1857." The rear also features a re-entrant gabled wing and a 20th-century flat-roofed outshut.

These cottages were built as part of a model estate village and are one of four pairs that create a symmetrical composition.
