Description

This is a pair of estate cottages located in Preston on Stour, built between 1852 and 1856 for James Roberts West. The cottages are constructed of brick and feature a fishscale tile roof with decorative cresting and brick cross-axial stacks topped with hexagonal shafts. The design is in an L-plan.

The exterior consists of two storeys and a two-window range, with the gable breaking forward to the left of centre. The wide eaves and verges are adorned with chamfered brick cornices and gables. The entrance, located at the left end, has a segmental arch and features a plank door with enriched strap hinges, along with a gabled timber canopy that has decorative framing. The ground floor windows are segmental-headed with brick sills and labelmoulds above, consisting of 3-light and 2-light casements with enriched cast-iron glazing. The first floor has windows with 2-light casements, with one located in a gabled half-dormer on the right side.

On the right return, there is a canted bay window under a hipped roof, which has a datestone above in the gable. The rear wing includes an entrance with a gabled open timber porch and a half-dormer above, as well as a cross-axial stack with diagonal shafts.

The cottages were built as part of a model estate village and are arranged with three other pairs to create a symmetrical composition.
