Description
This is a pair of estate cottages located in Preston on Stour, built between 1852 and 1856 for James Roberts West. The cottages are constructed of brick and feature a fishscale tile roof with decorative cresting, along with a brick cross-axial stack that has diagonal shafts at both the front and rear. The design is L-shaped.
The cottages are two storeys tall and have a two-window range, with the gable breaking forward to the right of the center. They have wide eaves and verges, which are accented by a chamfered brick cornice and gables. Each end has a segmental-headed entrance that includes a plank door with ornate strap hinges and a labelmould. The ground floor windows are segmental-headed with brick sills and labelmoulds above 3-light casements featuring cast-iron lattice glazing. On the first floor, there are 2-light casement windows, with the left window set in a gabled half-dormer. The left returns of the cottages have single lights on the ground floor and 2-light casement windows on the first floor.
The interior has not been inspected. These cottages were built as part of a model estate village and are one of four pairs that create a symmetrical composition.
