Description
9 and 10 Preston on Stour are a pair of estate cottages built between 1852 and 1856 for James Roberts West. The cottages are constructed of brick and feature a fishscale tile roof with decorative cresting and brick cross-axial stacks topped with hexagonal shafts. They are designed in an L-plan and stand two storeys tall with a two-window range. The gables break forward to the left of centre, and the wide eaves and verges are accentuated by a chamfered brick cornice.
The left end has a segmental-headed entrance with a plank door that has enriched strap hinges, topped by a gabled timber canopy with decorative framing. The ground floor features segmental-headed windows with brick sills and labelmoulds, including a 3-light and a 2-light casement with enriched cast-iron glazing. The first floor has windows with 2-light casements, with one located in a gabled half-dormer on the right side.
The right return of the cottages includes a canted bay window beneath a hipped roof, which has a datestone above in the gable. The rear wing features an entrance with a gabled open timber porch and a half-dormer above, along with a cross-axial stack with diagonal shafts. The cottages were built as part of a model estate village and are arranged with three other pairs to create a symmetrical composition.
