Description
11 and 12 Preston on Stour are a pair of estate cottages built between 1852 and 1856 for James Roberts West. They are constructed of brick and feature a fishscale tile roof with decorative cresting and brick cross-axial stacks with hexagonal shafts, arranged in an L-plan.
The cottages are two storeys high and have a two-window range, with the gable breaking forward to the right of center. They have wide eaves and verges, complemented by a chamfered brick cornice and gables. The entrance, located at the right end, has a segmental arch and features a plank door with enriched strap hinges, along with a gabled timber canopy that has decorative framing. The ground floor windows are segmental-headed with brick sills and labelmoulds above, containing 2-light and 3-light casements with enriched cast-iron glazing. The first floor has windows with 2-light casements, with the left window set in a gabled half-dormer.
The left side of the building has a canted bay window under a hipped roof, which is topped with a datestone in the gable above. The rear wing includes an entrance with a gabled open timber porch and a half-dormer above, as well as a cross-axial stack with diagonal shafts.
These cottages were built as part of a model estate village and are one of four pairs that create a symmetrical composition.
