Description
Nos. 5 and 6 are a pair of estate cottages built between 1852 and 1856 for James Roberts West. They are constructed of brick and feature a fishscale tile roof with decorative cresting and a brick cross-axial stack with diagonal shafts at both the front and back. The cottages are designed in an L-plan and are two storeys high with a two-window range.
The gable breaks forward to the left of the center, and the wide eaves and verges are adorned with a chamfered brick cornice and gables. Each end has a segmental-headed entrance with a plank door that includes enriched strap hinges and a labelmould. The ground floor has segmental-headed windows with brick sills and labelmoulds above 3-light casements featuring cast-iron lattice glazing. The first floor has windows with 2-light casements, including one in a gabled half-dormer on the right side. The returns have single lights on the ground floor and 2-light casement windows on the first floor. The rear of the cottages has two gables.
These cottages were built as part of a model estate village and are arranged with three other pairs to create a symmetrical composition.
