Description

The Gables is a house located in Preston on Stour, originally built in the 16th century with additions from the 19th century and restoration in the 20th century. It features a timber-frame structure with plastered infill set on a limestone plinth, along with a brick and timber-frame rear wing. The roof is steeply pitched, covered with old tiles, and has brick ridges and lateral stacks. The house has a three-unit plan plus a rear wing and stands two storeys high with an attic.

The exterior has a four-window range. The entrance, positioned to the left of the center, features a plank door with strap hinges set in a 20th-century projecting timber surround. To the left of the entrance is a three-light casement window, while to the right are three windows: one smaller and two paired, all with three-light casements. The right end of the house has a four-light casement window, and all windows are leaded. On the first floor, there are four-light projecting ovolo-mullioned-and-transomed windows at each end, a similar four-light window to the left of center, and a two-light window to the right of center. The attic features gables at each end, jettied on moulded brackets, with three-light mullioned windows. The windows have leaded lights, some made with crown glass. The ground floor displays close-studded framing, while the upper floor has square framing.

The rear of the house includes single-light and two-light ovolo-mullioned windows above a French window to the left of the long rear wing, which has some timber framing. The end section of the wing is from the 19th century and features two lateral stacks, mostly renewed casements, and one small three-light mullioned window. There is also an end canopied entrance and a bay window. To the right of the wing, there is a single-storey flat-roofed addition with two projecting dormers under hipped roofs. The interior has not been inspected.
