Description
Lower Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1627, with 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of squared, coursed limestone and limestone ashlar, featuring quoins. The roof is made of slate and tile, with ashlar end and ridge stacks. The building has one storey plus an attic and a four-window range, following a three-unit, through-passage plan.
To the center left, there is a part-glazed door set within a 20th-century stone porch. On the left and right, there are 20th-century casements with original wood lintels. The house has three 20th-century dormers. The left gable end displays a four-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window, with a king mullion on the ground floor, and a three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window above. Above the window in the gable, there is a plain datestone inscribed 'R 1627 B'.
At the rear, there is a large external stack with a stone-slated gable and a 20th-century brick flue. A 20th-century door with a wood lintel is located at the rear, with a 19th-century two-light casement above it.
Inside, the farmhouse features a stone flagged passage floor with timber and plaster partitions on either side. There are chamfered spine beams with joists and a large open fireplace with a chamfered timber bressumer that has ogee stops. A further large open fireplace is located on the rear wall, corresponding to the large external stack, featuring a four-centred-arched stone fireplace with moulded spandrels that may have been reset.
