Description

Blackwell Grange is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of squared, coursed limestone and features quoins. The slate roof, which was lowered in the 19th century, has a coped gable and brick ridge and end stacks. The building has two storeys and an L-shaped plan, with a four-window range.

On the left side of the wing, there is an old plank door with a wooden lintel. To the left and right of this door, on both floors, are 19th-century two-light leaded casements with old glass. On the ground and first floors at the far right, there is an ovolo-moulded two-light mullioned window with a hood mould and label stops. The main facade features a four-light, ovolo-moulded mullioned window with a king mullion on the ground floor to the left and right, and between them is a straight-chamfered two-light mullioned window with a wooden lintel, replacing the original door, the quoins of which are still visible. On the first floor to the left is a three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window, with a two-light ovolo-moulded window in the centre and to the right. The gable end has a canted bay with ovolo-moulded mullioned windows, and above it is a three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window. All windows have hood moulds and label stops, along with 19th-century catches.

Inside, there is a stone fireplace with a four-centred arch and moulded detailing. A large open fireplace features a timber bressumer and a large oven to the right of the fireplace. The room with the stone fireplace has ovolo-moulded spine beams and further chamfered beams, along with stone flagged floors.
