Description
Hay House is a house that was originally two cottages, dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble and features a steeply pitched thatched roof, with brick ridge and end stacks. The building has a three-unit plan and consists of a single storey, an attic, and a cock loft. The entrance is located to the right and has a 20th-century door with a wooden lintel. To the right of the entrance is a three-light wooden casement window with a wooden lintel, while to the left is a 20th-century wooden three-light window with a stop-chamfered wooden lintel. Farther left, there is another three-light casement window, also with a stop-chamfered wooden lintel. The attic features a three-light wooden mullioned window on the left, with lead cames and crown glass, and a 20th-century wooden window on the right. There is a thatched rectangular bread oven projection to the left of the door.
Inside, the house has stop-chamfered beams and joists, an inglenook fireplace with stop-chamfered bressumers, and a wooden spiral staircase. The floors are made of wide floorboards, and there are plank doors. The collar beam roof truss has been widened with a later spur and principal rafters.
