Description
Upper Chelmscote Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1688, with a datestone indicating a later date of 1698. It is constructed of brick with ironstone quoins and window and door dressings, featuring Flemish bond with vitrified headers. The front has a steeply pitched slate roof, while the rear is covered with red tiles. The gables are stone coped and topped with ball finials, and there are brick ridge stacks and moulded kneelers. The farmhouse has an ironstone plinth and a three-unit plan, standing two storeys plus an attic with a five-window range.
The central entrance features a wide 20th-century door that is partly glazed and has margin lights. Above the door is an ironstone hood mould with label stops. The doorway is flanked by pairs of two-light stone-mullioned windows that have a simple splay section, also with hood moulds and label stops. There are five similar windows on the first floor, all with lead cames, and most equipped with wrought-iron casement fasteners. The rear of the farmhouse includes raking roofed outshuts and a two-storey rear wing. The main front has a two-storey extension to the left, which has a brick end stack and extension stairs leading to the loft, with some renewed brickwork. Inside, the farmhouse is noted for having a 17th-century dog-leg staircase.
