Description
The Poplars Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1688, located in Aston Cantlow. It is built of Flemish bond red brick with intermittent brick string courses and features an old tile roof with brick ridge and lateral stacks. The building has a T-plan layout, with a cross wing to the right, and stands two storeys high with a two-window range. The left range has a baffle entry with a ribbed door set in a simple moulded wood surround, topped by a tiled hood with a moulded wood cornice. The windows are mid-20th century metal casements with glazing bars, consisting of a two-light window to the left and a three-light window to the right, both featuring a straight brick head and a segmental arch above. There is one first-floor window, while the cross wing has a 20th-century canted bay window and a small casement above. A string course runs above the first floor, and the right return side presents a three-window range with a stable door. Between the first and second windows is a large stack that is slightly recessed. The ground floor is made of regularly coursed limestone with a crude arched recess, while the upper part is constructed of thin bricks. The large square panelled shaft has ornamental brickwork featuring two lozenges, one of which has some painted decoration, along with a shield containing a datestone. At the rear, the cross wing gable has a pulley housing and irregular fenestration. Inside, the farmhouse features exposed ceiling beams, an open fireplace, and winder stairs leading to the landing with cut-out splat balusters. The doors are 17th-century three-plank doors with strap hinges. The farmhouse was formerly known as Bartlam's Farm and forms a group with the adjoining barns.
