Description
The Latch is a house, originally built in the 18th century and converted into two houses in the early 19th century, now again a single dwelling. It was extended and altered in the early 19th century. The structure is predominantly cob with 19th-century brick extensions, and has a gabled thatched roof with plain tile roofing to the extensions. The original plan was a single unit, extended to a two-unit plan in the early 19th century.
The exterior is single-storey with an attic, and has a four-window front. The entrance is a 20th-century door under a timber lintel, to the left of a blocked doorway now fitted with an early 20th-century iron casement. Timber lintels are above the 2-light casement windows with glazing bars. There is a gabled one-bay extension to the rear left, dating from the 19th century, and 20th-century flat-roofed extensions to the left.
The interior features plank doors with strap hinges, leading to two winder staircases. It also has a side-purlin roof, with 20th-century alterations. The building is a rare example of a cob and thatch cottage for its area.
