Description

Pound Cottage is a building that likely started as a house with a cart shed, dating from around 1700, with possibly an earlier section to the east and later additions, including a 20th-century porch. The structure features timber-framing with painted brick nogging and a renewed tile roof. It has a single-storey with an attic and a four-window range, including two attic dormers. The entrance is through an off-centre 20th-century porch with a plank door. The cottage has mainly metal casement windows, some with lead cames, and to the right of the porch, there is evidence of a former cart opening on the front and rear walls. The two roof dormers also have metal casement windows with external latches.

Inside, the cottage retains extensive timber-framing on the rear and partition walls. It features a spine beam with stop-chamfers and end stops, along with some early board doors. The inglenook fireplace in the central room has a reused beam, which is said to have replaced a worn original beam, and there are pine cupboards on either side.

The Wootton Wawen Report suggests that Pound Cottage was originally built for agricultural purposes, as indicated by broad and lofty openings (now infilled) for hay wagons. However, the extensive interior framing and finished beams in the ground-floor ceilings imply that it was used for domestic purposes, if not entirely at first, then shortly thereafter. The cottage forms a group with The Bull's Head Inn on Alcester Road and Hawthornes on Stratford Road.
