Description
Grey Mill is a late 17th-century paper mill that has been converted into a house. It is believed to be built on earlier foundations, with a range added to the rear in the early 19th century and renovations completed around 1980. The building features blue lias stone on the ground floor, topped by timber-framing with plaster infill, and reddish Bidford brick on the upper part of the rear range. The roof is decorated with club tiles.
The mill stands two storeys high with an attic and consists of three cells. It has small square timber-framing and an entrance at the gable end, which includes a 20th-century plank door and a window to the right. There is a tripartite window on the first floor and another window in the gable, with 20th-century casement windows throughout. The eaves are adorned with a modillion cornice, and ornamental ridge tiles complete the roof.
Inside, there are three queen post trusses that are partly concealed and two king post trusses, one of which is cut through and located at the gable end. The interior showcases exposed timbers, chamfered beams, and joists. Remnants of the mill's machinery, including a pulley block and irons for sluice gates, can still be seen. The mill is depicted on a map from 1725 and ceased operation around 1920.
