Description

Blue Hole Cottage is a mid-17th century building that originally consisted of three cottages but has been converted into a single house. There is a 19th-century range to the right and restorations were made around 1980-1990, which included an outshut to the left and an extension to the rear. The cottage features a blue lias stone plinth topped with timber-framing and plaster infill, with some remaining wattle and daub. The right part has painted brick nogging, while the left is made of reddish-brown brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles.

The exterior is two storeys high with three first-floor windows. The timber-framing is small and square, supported by angle braces. There are steps leading to a pair of off-centre entrances on the left and another entrance to the right, all with plank doors. The windows throughout are 20th-century casements, and the roof is gabled with internal, ridge, and left end stacks.

Inside, there are two inglenook fireplaces with bressumer beams, one of which is located in the original smoke stack. The interior features two main chamfered beams with chamfered stops resting on massive, chamfered jowled studs, totaling six studs. The timber-framing is exposed, including on the partition walls, and there are plank doors. The upper floor has smoke-blackened timbers, and the purlins and arched braces are also exposed, with some having been renewed.
