Description

The Wootton Wawen Aqueduct is a Grade II* listed aqueduct built in 1813, with later additions and restorations made in 1960. It was designed by William Whitmore for the Stratford Canal Company. The structure features a cast-iron trough that includes an integral towpath, with cast-iron railings on the north side. The supporting brick piers and retaining walls are constructed in English bond and topped with ashlar copings. The railings have stick balusters and a moulded handrail with brackets. The aqueduct is supported by three piers, with the two eastern piers splayed and the western pier having been restored.

On the south side of the aqueduct, there is an attached oval plate that reads: "This Aqueduct was erected by The Stratford Canal company in October 1813, Bernard Dewes Esqr Chairman, W James Esqr Dept Chairman, W Whitmore Engineer." The aqueduct crosses Stratford Road (A34).

The Southern Stratford Canal was built between 1793 and 1816 at a cost of £500,000. A 13.5-mile section of the canal, from Kingswood Junction in Lapworth to Stratford-upon-Avon, was leased by the National Trust in 1960 for restoration from the British Waterways Board, and the National Trust acquired the freehold around 1964. The Wootton Wawen Aqueduct is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, with the county number 132.
