Description
Canal Bridge Number 53, also known as Lucy's Farm Bridge, is a Grade II listed split bridge built between 1812 and 1816, with later restorations. It features brick abutments and walls, which are cement rendered in places, topped with stone copings. The bridge has cast-iron rails and decks, although the decks are now coated with concrete. The abutments support two cantilevered decks that have cross-framed integral handrails and are designed to accommodate tow ropes. The parapet walls are splayed.
The South Stratford Canal, of which this bridge is a part, was constructed between 1793 and 1816 at a cost of £500,000. In 1960, 13.5 miles of the canal, stretching from Kingswood Junction in Lapworth to Stratford-upon-Avon, was leased by the National Trust from the British Waterways Board for restoration, and the National Trust took over the freehold around 1964.
