Description
Canal Bridge Number 51, also known as Green Lane Bridge, is a split bridge built between 1812 and 1816, with later restorations. It features brick abutments and walls that are partly stuccoed and scored to imitate ashlar, topped with stone copings. The bridge includes cast-iron rails and decks, with abutments supporting two cantilevered decks that have X-framed integral handrails. The design accommodates tow ropes and has splayed parapet walls that are curved in plan. The South Stratford Canal, where the bridge is located, was constructed from 1793 to 1816 at a cost of £500,000. In 1960, the National Trust leased 13.5 miles of the canal from Kingswood Junction, Lapworth to Stratford-upon-Avon for restoration, and they acquired the freehold around 1964.
