Description

Shelfield House is a historic house located in Aston Cantlow, originally known as Shelfield Square Farm. It has early 17th century origins but was mainly constructed around 1700, with some 19th century additions. The house was built for the Skinner family and features red Flemish bond brick with rusticated stone quoins, a moulded stone plinth, string courses, and a cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with tiles, and there are brick panelled internal stacks.

The house is two storeys high with an attic and has a central staircase plan. It measures three bays by three bays, with a shorter lower addition on the left side. The central entrance boasts a six-panelled part-glazed door with a panelled intrados, framed by a finely moulded wood doorcase that includes Tuscan pilasters, an entablature with a triglyph frieze, and a moulded cornice. The windows are 16-pane sashes with moulded frames, set under gauged brick flat arches with keystones. There are three pedimented casement dormers, and the left wing features a sash window with a gauged brick flat arch on the ground floor. The right return side has 19th century casements and a blocked central window, while both return sides have pedimented dormers. The left return side retains an original leaded-light cross window on the first floor.

At the rear, there is a four-window range with two large gables and 19th century casements under segmental brick arches, along with a flush six-panelled door. Inside, the entrance hall features an otter fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and exposed timber framing. The room to the right showcases fine bolection-moulded panelling from around 1700, while the rear room has a bolection-moulded stone fireplace, which is said to be similar to one found in a bedroom. The house also contains two-panelled doors with H-L hinges and a staircase with turned balusters. The kitchen includes an open fireplace. Shelfield House is part of a group that includes gatepiers, a dovecote, and a cartshed.
