Description
Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1580. It is timber framed, featuring close studding on the ground floor with smaller framing above, and has lath and plaster along with whitewashed brick infill. The roof is tiled, and there are brick stacks. The building has a double-depth lobby-entry plan and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range. The central entrance features an 18th-century part-glazed six-panelled door with a moulded wood surround and a hood supported by shaped brackets. The windows are 18th or 19th-century casements with glazing bars, and the attic includes three substantial timber-framed gable dormers. The roof has two spans, and the central stack is made of thin bricks with square shafts and V-pilasters.
The left return side has two adjacent ranges with jowled posts and tile-hung gables, while the right return side also features jowled posts. The rear of the building has two ranges; the higher one on the right has been refronted in brick and includes 20th-century casements under segmental brick arches, and the lower range on the left has two ground floor casements.
Inside, the room on the right has 17th-century hall-height panelling, a built-in dresser, and an open fireplace. The lobby contains a winder staircase with a stop-chamfered newel post. The room on the left features a stone fireplace, and the kitchen has an open fireplace as well. The ceiling beams are ogee stop-chamfered, and it is said to have queen post roofs. Church Farmhouse is part of an important group that includes the barn range, the Church of the Holy Trinity, and the barn and shelter shed.
