Description

This is a late 16th and 17th century cottage located in Studley. The original structure is timber-framed with whitewashed brick infill, and largely underbuilt in whitewashed brick. It has an old tile roof and a central chimney stack built of thin bricks. The cottage’s original layout was a two-unit plan, with a single window on each floor. A 19th and 20th century single-story addition of whitewashed brick sits to the left, containing a 20th century plank door in a brick basket-arch doorway. A late 20th century bow window has been added to the left side, along with late 20th century casement windows. The chimney stack comprises three square shafts with V-pilasters. The return sides display exposed timber framing with jowled posts, visible only on the upper part of the right side, and incorporate a 20th century casement window. Inside, the cottage retains exposed timber framing and a broad, open fireplace. It is reputed to have formerly operated as an inn.
