Description

The Left Entrance Lodge, gates, gatepiers, and attached wall at Studley Castle were built around 1834, likely by Samuel Beazley for Sir Francis Goodricke. This Gothic Revival style structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a moulded stone plinth and cornices. It is octagonal and one storey high, with the roof hidden behind a parapet and no visible stack. The entrance is located on the right return side and includes a projecting porch with a 4-centred chamfered doorway, double-leaf doors, and an overlight. The left and right return sides have lancet windows set in moulded arches. The building has a cornice and a crenellated parapet, with 20th-century casements in moulded arches on three sides. It also features polygonal angle buttresses with blind lancets and caps, and a string course at the top of the buttresses, along with a machicolated crenellated parapet. The rear of the lodge is similar in design. The interior has not been inspected.

The cast iron Gothic gates are adorned with quatrefoils, tracery, shields, and crenellated tops. Between the pedestrian and main gates stands an ashlar gatepier that has a moulded plinth and cornice, along with blind lancets. Attached to the lodge on the left is an ashlar wall that includes a short crenellated right angle section. The remaining wall, which is lower and polygonal in form, features a moulded plinth and coping, polygonal buttresses, and ends in a taller octagonal pier with a moulded cap. There is also a 20th-century single storey addition behind the wall.
