Description
The Right Entrance Lodge, gates, gatepier, and attached wall at Studley Castle date from around 1834 and were likely designed by Samuel Beazley for Sir Francis Goodricke. The lodge is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a moulded stone plinth and cornices, and features an octagonal plan. It is built in the Gothic Revival style and comprises a single storey. An entrance is located in the left return side, accessed via a projecting porch with a 4-centred chamfered doorway fitted with double doors and an overlight. The left and right return sides contain lancet windows set within moulded arches. A cornice and crenellated parapet top the lodge. C20 casements are set within moulded arches on three sides of the front elevation. Polygonal angle buttresses feature blind lancets and caps, connected by a string course. A machicolated crenellated parapet runs around the top. The rear of the lodge is similar. The interior has not been inspected. The cast iron gates, displaying quatrefoils, tracery, shields, and crenellated tops, are Gothic in style. The ashlar gatepier, situated between the pedestrian and main gates, has a moulded plinth and cornice and blind lancets. An attached ashlar wall on the right side of the lodge features a short, crenellated section. The remainder of the wall, angled from this section, is lower, with a moulded plinth and coping, polygonal buttresses, and concludes with a taller octagonal pier with a moulded cap. A C20 single-storey addition is located behind the wall.
