Description

Shelfield Lodge Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1600. It is timber framed but has been almost entirely rebuilt in the late 17th century, 18th century, and 19th century. The structure features brick construction, with old and 20th-century tile roofs and brick stacks. The building has a complex plan and stands two storeys high with a three-window range. The front displays late 17th century to 18th century Flemish bond red brick on the right and 19th-century brick on the left, along with a brick dentil cornice. There is a central mid to late 19th-century open front brick porch with bargeboards and a chamfered segmental archway, leading to a half-glazed four-panelled door with an overlight featuring glazing bars. The windows are mid-20th-century metal casements with glazing bars, and some have concrete lintels. The roof is hipped to the left. To the right, there is a set-back 19th-century brick wing with 20th-century metal casements. The left return side features a projecting gable wing with a one-window range and 19th-century casements; the gable is rendered and likely timber framed. A 17th-century ridge stack made of thin bricks with thin square pilasters is present. At the rear, there are irregular gabled ranges and a large central 17th-century internal stack of thin bricks. Inside, the kitchen and another room have broad-chamfered cross beams and open fireplaces with chamfered bressumers, along with chamfered beams throughout. The first floor contains old two-panelled doors. The farmhouse is part of an interesting group that includes a vehicle shed, cartshed, granary, stable, loosebox, and archway.
