Description
The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a church built in 1878 by William Smith for Canon Thoyts. It is constructed of ironstone ashlar with red tile roofs on the nave and chancel. The church features an apsidal chancel, a nave, a south tower, and a north vestry, all designed in the Early English style. The three-stage bell tower has an uppermost bell chamber and a pyramidal wood-shingled roof.
The chancel is adorned with six lancet windows and two triplet lancets, all with continuous hood moulds, some featuring foliage stops. The south side of the nave has two lancets with hood moulds and foliage stops, while the north side has four lancets. The west window consists of three lancets with a quatrefoil above, and there is a stair turret projection to the right.
The tower has a pointed arched entrance flanked by flat angle buttresses, which have gabled niches at each angle. The ground floor features single lancets, and above them is a four-window arcade with two lancets. The second storey has three pointed arched openings with clustered columns and louvres, along with a corbel table decorated with foliage. The tower is also embellished with gargoyles, buttresses, and a moulded plinth, and it has a plank door with wrought-iron hinges.
Inside, the apsidal chancel showcases polychrome stonework made of limestone, ironstone, and marble, along with a marble reredos and a stone arcade. The nave has an arched braced roof, with some arches springing from stone corbels. Additional features include a brass communion rail and various late 19th-century fittings such as choir stalls, pews, a pulpit, and a stone font. A 19th-century wrought-iron gate leads to the south doorway. The church is prominently situated, overlooking the valley and Brailes to the south.
