Description

M and J Ashley is a shop with a dwelling above, originally built as a house in the mid-18th century. It was raised by a storey in the early 19th century, with an additional early 19th-century range to the left. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar quoins, remnants of a storey band, a moulded eaves cornice, and window dressings in the 18th-century section on the right. The roof is slate with a stone-coped gable on the right side.

The structure has three storeys and a four-window range, originally designed with a two-unit plan. On the far right, there is a passageway that was once a doorway, framed by a pilaster surround and topped with a flat hood on consoles. In the centre, there is a 19th-century part-glazed door with an overlight. Flanking this door are two canted shop fronts from the 19th century, each with a hood above.

On the first floor, there are two mid-18th-century 12-pane sash windows with moulded stone sills, architraves, and keystones. The second floor features two 18th-century six-pane sash windows, also with moulded stone sills. In the early 19th-century range to the left, the ground floor has two shop front windows with moulded wood surrounds. The original openings retain brick flat arches. The first floor has two twelve-pane sashes, and the second floor has two six-pane sashes, both with brick flat arches. The interior has not been inspected.
