Description
This pedestrian footbridge, dated 1842, is located at the junction of the Caldon Canal and the Leek Branch. It is constructed from cast iron and coursed squared and dressed stone. The stone abutments feature a roving plan arrangement with deep copings that follow the incline of the abutment. There is a raised string at the impost level of the cast-iron span, which has a segmental arch and a balustrade screen with a fish-scale pattern. The date is inscribed in the center panel. The Caldon Canal was opened around 1779, while the Leek Branch was opened around 1801.
