Description
This is a lock at the entry to the Leek Branch of the Caldon Canal, built around 1800. It features stone-coped semi-engineering brick retaining walls that narrow along the length of the lock. The lock gate, which dates from around 1981, has a wrought iron top rail. The lock is located to the south of the lock keeper's cottage and to the north of the feeder basin. The Leek Branch of the Caldon Canal was opened around 1801 to facilitate the transport of cheaper coal to Leek, designed by engineer John Rennie.
