Description
Lock Keeper's Cottage is an early 19th-century building made of rendered brickwork, topped with a blue tile roof and featuring ridge and side stacks. It has an L-shaped plan and a small two-storey front. To the left, there is a gable with a mullioned two-light window on the first floor above a small hipped bay window, which also has a similar mullioned two-light casement. A side stack runs up the center of the right face, and there is a door on the right side elevation. The cottage is located at the junction of the Leek Branch with the main canal, which opened in 1779, while the Leek Branch was opened in 1801. The early surveys for the canal were conducted by James Brindley in 1772, but after his death, the work was taken over by Henshaw and John Rennie.
