Description
Lock No. 11 on the Caldon Canal was built around 1779, with later modifications in 1841 and 1973. It is constructed of red sandstone, with some brick and replaced gates. The lock chamber features stone coping and stone blocks, with some brick repairs that are only partially visible. The tail bay is made of red sandstone tooled blocks and has a split bridge with wrought iron spandrels, along with two flights of stone steps. The northern steps have a stepped heelgrip platform, while the southern steps are curving and carry water. The lock gates are operated by steel balance beams, with the tail gates featuring gate-mounted gearing, and the head gates, dated 1973, equipped with inclined mounted rack and pinion gearing. There is a bypass weir at the head made of engineering brick, stone, and some concrete, with a single arch culvert. This lock is included for its group value.
