Description
The bridge at SJ 948 537 is an accommodation bridge built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick and features stone copings, strings, voussoirs, and rubbing blocks. The bridge has an elliptical arch with a string at carriageway level. The parapet is cambered on the north side only and terminates at both ends in piers set diagonally. It is located close to the lock keeper's cottage. This section of the Caldon Canal was opened around 1779 to transport limestone from Caldon Low, with John Rennie as the engineer.
