Description
The canal lock side pond, dating from around 1842, is constructed of stone and semi-engineering brick. It features a square basin with approximately 4-meter sides and rounded corners, set into the ground, with brick retaining walls and stone copings. The north side, facing the Leek Branch of the canal, is adorned with a wrought iron railed balustrade that has two horizontal bars that curve down to the copings on the east and west sides, finishing in scrolls. This pond is located in the center of a small group that includes the lock keeper's cottage, the lock itself, a footbridge, and accommodation bridges, where the Leek Branch connects to the main canal. The Leek Branch was engineered by John Rennie to facilitate the transport of cheaper coal to Leek.
